Sidharth Malhotra Celebrates His Birthday With Alia Bhatt
Jan 16, 2016 Vinod Gupta
It was 2012 when Sidharth Malhotra made his foray into Bollywood with Student Of The Year. But unlike his contemporaries, he hasn’t had too many releases in his four-year-long career. However, the actor says that doing fewer films has not been a calculated decision. As he turns a year older on Saturday January 16, he talks to Hindustan Times about his working birthday, how younger and older generations co-exist in the industry, and more.
What are your birthday plans?
I’ll be shooting for a dance number with Fawad Khan and Alia Bhatt for my next Kapoor and Sons. I think it is a good way to celebrate your birthday. We will be working on this for the next few days. So, in a way, I’ve been working pre and post my birthday. I like it when my work takes over my schedule.
So, there won’t be a party?
I am planning to have a party tonight with some friends and of course, the crew of the film.
How would you describe your next, Kapoor and Sons?
It is basically about how today’s modern, but slightly dysfunctional families solve their issues. There is comedy, drama and romance as well. Alia plays a girl-next-door, someone who’s not from our family.
Is there a growing sense of competition among the young crop of actors today?
Yes, but we know where to draw the line. We are not the ones to carry it (the sense of competition) to our personal lives. It is restricted to our movies and the box office. It doesn’t interfere with our social lives. We have an understanding that competition is for the theatres. We get along. There are so many times that we have played sports together, met at various people’s birthday parties, or met at other social occasions. At these times, everyone just puts everything aside, and has a fun night. But when it comes to the box office, we all want our films to do well and get appreciated. So, I think we’re intelligent enough to leave competition for the box office.
As seen from the recent Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer Singh box-office clash, where the latter’s film held its own, is there a sense of arrival among the young generation?
Yes, we have been feeling that for a while now. It happens. It is a process that you can’t announce. I think the Khans are still very much here. Hats off to them. They are still providing and catering to their big fan base. It is great to see Salman Khan getting into a new look for his next, and Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan do their bit for their upcoming films. So, I think we’re all co-existing. At present, they the three Khans are coming up with great content. They are the biggest stars that we have, and rightfully so. There’s enough and more work for everybody.
Unlike your contemporaries, you haven’t had too many releases. Is it a calculated move?
I decided to take some time off to train for Brothers 2015. So, it was more like going with the flow. Also, at that time, I was doing another film, which I let go off later. I took three months off for it. I’m trying to do at least two films this year. I’m hoping to do more movies, but then, we just have 12 months in a year.
